    The quality of some products really stands out above the rest. When selecting baby gear to buy, consult the guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Also, consumerreports.org does test and rate baby products like car seats.

    Baby Gifts

    Be sure to check for the latest recall information from the Consumer Product and Saftey Commission. This is especially important if purchasing products that haven't been sold in stores for a while, such as when buying new or previously owned products from Ebay.

    Car Seats
    Infant Car Seats - Rear facing infant car seats are the safest option for babies weighing up to 20 pounds.    More >>
    Convertible Car Seats - Convertible car seats can face backward or forward and are for babies/toddlers up to about 40 pounds, depending on the manufacturer and model. Babies should be in a rear facing car seat until they are 12 months old and weigh at least 20 pounds.    More >>
    Car Seat Accessories - Infant car seat carrier covers keep babies warm without the need for blankets or jackets, ensuring that they are securely strapped into the car seat. Car seat strap covers and an additional infant car seat base are also useful.    More >>

    Front carriers
    Front Carrier - Front carriers with wide, padded shoulder straps will be more comfortable for carrying baby.    More >>
    Slings - Slings should be made from a breathable fabric, such as cotton.

    * Note: Call the airline ahead of time if you are traveling by airplane and are planning on carrying your baby in a front carrier during take off or landing. Most airlines will not allow the use of a front carrier during take off and landing because of safety concerns.

    Backpack carriers
    Backpack carriers are for carrying babies who can sit unassisted and have full head control. Popular backpack carriers are made by Kelty Kids and Sherpani Alpina.

    Playards
    Playards - Playards are good as portable cribs or as a safe place for your baby to play. Some models have a bassinet and a changing station.    More >>
    * Look for JPMA certified products.
    * Never let any ribbons or strings hang down into the playard.
    * Some playards come with hanging toys. Remove these toys when infant can sit up.
    * Never add any extra mattresses, padding or blankets to the playard as they pose entrapment or suffocation hazards.
